Far Infrared Saunas


Detoxification has been practiced since the beginning of time as a spiritual and physical cleansing of the body, mind and spirit. Due to the toxic burden our bodies encounter everyday in the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink and in which we bathe, we need to cleanse regularly. Detoxification of the physical body is imperative, especially if we are sick in any way.

Toxins accumulate and can lead to ill-health if they are not addressed. Toxins either come from outside the body (exogenous) or are produced inside the body (endogenous). Exogenous toxins include chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, toxic gases, mold and so on. Endogenous toxins are produced inside the body from protein breakdown and from substances produced by bacteria, yeast and fungi in the digestive tract.

Physical detoxification involves removing toxins from the internal organs of excretion in which they may be stored and improving the functioning of these organs so that they are more efficient in their detoxification processes.

Far InfraRed Saunas

Far infrared (FIR) saunas are reported to have better detoxifying effects compared to traditional saunas and steam rooms. FIR is the same as the heat we absorb from the sun, but not the ultraviolet rays that can be damaging to the skin. It is just below red light in the electromagnetic spectrum of light and cannot be seen, only felt as heat. FIR energy is absorbed by our bodies and penetrates into the fat and muscles of the body, not just superficially as do regular saunas. For this reason, it has a greater ability to detoxify the lymphatic system and fat cells.

Far infrared (FIR) saunas are more comfortable to tolerate because the ambient temperature is not as hot as the traditional sauna. The following is a list of reported ailments that benefit from FIR saunas:

  • Damaged tissues such as: sprains, strains, muscle pain
  • Arthritis
  • Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis
  • Cellulite
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Ear infections
  • Heavy metal toxicity
  • Obesity

Far infrared saunas increase perspiration and metabolic rate. It is possible to burn up to 600 calories in one thirty minute session in a FIR sauna and perspire 500 grams of sweat. This type of sauna also increases the heart rate and improves circulation.

Saunas are generally not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, those with auto-immune disorders such as lupus, and severely depleted adrenal function. Always check with your health practitioner before beginning a sauna protocol and make sure that adequate water is consumed before, during and after a sauna.
